A hospital information system is only as reliable as the electricity supply it runs on. It's time power was designed as part of the digital health stack, not around it.
Ask a hospital IT team what causes the most downtime in their digital systems, and the answer is rarely a software bug. It's far more often a power interruption — a grid outage that outlasts the backup generator's fuel supply, a voltage fluctuation that trips sensitive equipment, an unplanned load shed that takes down servers mid-transaction.
When that happens, the consequences aren't abstract. Patient records become briefly unreachable at the moment a clinician needs them. Diagnostic equipment loses calibration. Cold-chain storage for vaccines and medication is put at risk. Digital claims systems lose transactions mid-process. The most sophisticated hospital information system in the world is only as reliable as the electricity supply underneath it.
Most digital health planning treats power as an assumption rather than a design variable — something the facility is expected to already have, rather than something the digital health programme needs to actively secure. That assumption doesn't hold in a great many of the environments where digital health investment is most needed.
The result is a familiar failure pattern: a well-designed platform, properly configured, professionally deployed — running on infrastructure that was never engineered to support it reliably. The software gets blamed for what is, in reality, an infrastructure gap.
Power is not the backdrop to digital health. It's part of the system.
